Most Day Spa Managers will allow gift certificate changes in some way – the ones that are purchased directly from their website or spa. Third party gift certificates fall under stricter rules and most likely cannot be changed. Many people think that they can substitute one service for another, however a spa might have made arrangements to accommodate a certain number of heavily discounted coupons or gift certificates and made arrangements with their staff for lower wages during the redemption of these types of gift certificates. That’s one of the many reasons why large scale coupons are so rampant. They are enticing you to come in and try a specific service. Also, if they made gift certificate changes for you, they’d have to make a concession for thousands of other people and then everything becomes chaotic at the spa and in general that is not a good thing!
So if you want that special that is listed on the one day deal – be prepared to do that exact service within the time frames and rules specified on the offer (no gift certificate changes). If it doesn’t work for you – don’t buy it and expect to convince the receptionist to make a change for you, it will most likely not happen. If you DO get approval for gift certificate changes, do the spa a favor and keep this information to yourself so they don’t get massive phone calls with people trying to reconfigure the deal. It just makes things complicated folks!
I just don’t want to make Gift Certificate changes, can I get the money instead?
No. Unfortunately the person who bought it for you wanted you to have it and they would be very upset with the spa if the spa just gave you the cash. If the person wanted you to have money in cash form, they would have done that. So what do you do? Can you swap it for another service? What is your reason for not wanting to use the Gift Certificate? Talk to the spa manager and work this out. I am sure you will both find a common ground. Many people are a bit shy about spa services. Let them know your concerns. Maybe you need to go to the spa and see the rooms and feel comfortable first before booking your services. Give this a try.
Gift Certificate Changes Don’t Work for You
If you cannot come to any conclusion, perhaps you are moving out of town and cannot give your GC to a friend or you simply cannot visit the spa – what else can you do? One option is to ask the Spa Manager if you could donate your gift to someone else. Many spas are inundated with silent auction Gift Certificate requests from all sorts of organizations. You can ask the Spa Manager to donate in your name that particular spa package to a community organization that you chose or they could choose it for you. This is not uncommon and it makes you feel good to know that the spa services will be used and the money received for it went towards a local charity. That’s always a good option.
Whatever you do, it is good to make your Gift Certificate appointment within the first 3 months of receiving it. You might forget about it and it will expire – or you might lose it! Most spas keep track of these, however there are a few spas that feel it is your responsibility to hold the original and will not allow a gift certificate redemption without the original present. These methods are usually put in place to avoid theft issues, but really all spas should have a tracking system in place. Most GC’s can be verified with a valid id too. If your Gift Certificate is stolen, immediately call the spa and let them make a note of it. When you arrive for your services they should have a note on their system to check your id. Be sure to do this and enjoy your day spa experience soon!
